On 26 February, Minister of Justice of Ukraine Denys Maliuska and Deputy Minister Iryna Mudra took part in a series of meetings with representatives of the European Commission in Brussels.
During the meeting with EU Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union Mairead McGuinness, the parties discussed the possibility of transferring to Ukraine the excess profits from seized russian assets accumulated over the previous period and provided a detailed legal justification for the transfer of the bulk of the seized assets.
At a meeting of the Freeze and Seize Task Force with the participation of EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders and Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General JUST Ana Gallego, Denys Maliuska noted the importance of bringing russia to justice, including through asset confiscation and transfer of proceeds of crime to Ukraine, for the functioning and reconstruction of Ukraine.
Iryna Mudra thanked the Task Force members for their work, suggested strengthening cooperation in combating sanctions circumvention and gave a specific example of a sanctions circumvention scheme with a proposal to develop a joint solution.
The leadership of the Ministry of Justice also met with Gert Jan Koopman, Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR).
The purpose of the meeting was to continue discussing the finalisation of the draft Ukraine Plan for the implementation of the European Commission’s proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on establishing the Ukraine Facility.
