Health Ministry: There are no suspect cases of Ebola Virus in Ukraine

Ukraine’s State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service [SSES] carries out constant monitoring of the epidemiological situation associated with the spread of the Ebola virus, and takes measures to prevent importation of the disease into the territory of the country.

SSES has informed central boards of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service in the regions and the city of Kyiv, water, railway, air transport and laboratory centres as to the spread of the Ebola virus. Also at checkpoints across the state border is reinforced sanitary-quarantine control for people arriving from Africa. As of today the man is suspected that the disease is not detected.

Taking into account the complication epidemiological situation in the world, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine recommended providing anti-epidemic and preventive measures when implementing rotation of personnel of the United Nations Mission in Liberia.

Ukraine’s State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service as well as the Foreign Ministry recommend Ukrainian citizens to refrain from visiting West African countries until the situation normalizes.

Background information

According to WHO, the cumulative number cases attributed to EVD, as of 8 August, 2014, stands at 1 711, including 932 deaths. Most cases of diseases caused by one of the five distinct species of Ebola virus - Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV), characterized by the most severe clinic and high fatality. Among involved in the epidemic process countries are Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

On August 8, 2014, the WHO declared the current outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa a public health emergency of international concern.
