In the first stage, 5,700 solar photovoltaic systems with a capacity of 350 W each will be delivered to Ukraine by summer. This decision was discussed by Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko during an online meeting with EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and CEO of Enel Francesco Starace. This assistance is the first step in a broader EU initiative announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Kyiv on February 2.
The solar panels, donated by one of the world’s largest energy companies, Italy’s Enel, will be delivered to Ukraine with logistical support from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and the Energy Community. The delivery will take place by summer.
“The gradual decentralization of Ukraine’s energy system is a guarantee of its security and resilience to attacks from russia. In implementing this course, the Ministry of Energy will rely on stimulating the development of green energy. In particular, it is crucial to expand opportunities for autonomous power supply of facilities that ensure the functioning of the country. We are grateful to Enel, other European companies, and the European Commission for their strong support and solidarity in the fight for life, light and heat in Ukrainian homes,” emphasized German Galushchenko.
According to Kadri Simson, the EU produced solar panels will help improve the energy security of schools, hospitals, and other public buildings in Ukraine. This first project will launch a broader initiative to improve Ukraine’s energy security by developing its renewable capacity. It is a clear example of European solidarity in action and how investments in clean technologies can make Europe more energy-secure and independent.
German Galushchenko added that installing as many solar panels as possible is very important in the context of preparing for the next heating season.
“This is part of our Energy Strategy, which is based on an energy mix. After the russian attacks on the Ukrainian energy system, we see that renewable energy is a great solution to decentralize generation. Ukraine remains committed to the green transition, and the war only accelerates it,” the Minister said.
