The Government has approved the State Target Program for the Fair Transformation of Ukraine's Coal Regions until 2030. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Ukraine during the forum "A New Stage for Ukraine's Coal Regions and Communities: Grand Opening of the Power4JustTransition Program".

“This is the first strategic document of the national level that will become a roadmap for both the authorities and international partners,” said Denys Shmyhal.

According to him, the program covers activities in 38 communities related to coal mining and thermal generation. In particular, attention will be focused on four key areas: support for the local economy, development of decentralized and diversified energy, human capital and environmental sustainability.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the transformation of coal regions is being carried out with the support of the German Government, the European Commission and the World Bank, as well as based on international experience.

He reminded that with the support of the German Government, a three-year project of structural changes in the coal regions of Ukraine, in particular in Lviv and Volyn regions, had been launched in 2021. As part of it, Ukraine received thousands of pieces of equipment from Germany and more than 35 countries to overcome the consequences of russian shelling.

Denys Shmyhal emphasized the importance of launching the new Power4JustTransition program, which started today and will last for the next three years.

"The experience gained by the pilot communities will be scaled up across the country,” the Prime Minister emphasized and thanked the German side for initiating a separate program to support the resilience of Ukrainian coal communities jointly with the European Investment Bank.

The Head of Government underlined that such initiatives, as well as projects to improve the energy efficiency of the public utilities sector, should be prioritized for support by international financial organizations.
