Yulia Svyrydenko: We are working on creating an international compensation mechanism for Ukrainians affected by russian aggression
Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko held an online meeting with the leadership of the Register of Damage for Ukraine. The main topic was how to make the compensation mechanism a real tool for payments to Ukrainians who lost homes, businesses, or property due to russian aggression.
“People are not waiting for papers but for real payments. We are working for this,” emphasised Yulia Svyrydenko.
Plans include:
- Opening several new claim categories in the Diia app in the coming weeks;
- By the end of the year, opening categories for businesses and the public sector.
The meeting also discussed the need for a separate international compensation fund for the system to work effectively. It could be funded by frozen russian assets and a portion of revenues from russian oil and gas exports.
The signing of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Claims Commission for Ukraine is expected in December in The Hague during a Diplomatic Conference. This will pave the way for launching a real payment mechanism for victims. Ukraine, together with international partners, is actively working to involve new participating countries in the mechanism’s implementation.
“russia must pay for the destruction and harm caused to the Ukrainian people and the country,” stressed Prime Minister of Ukraine.
