The local authorities of Vinnytsya came up with the initiative to consider the issue of building a bridge across the Dniester River to Moldova as the shortest route from the Baltic to the Balkans. This project is economically beneficial not only for Ukraine and Moldova, but also for the European Union. Therefore, the Government of Ukraine intends to come up with a proposal to the Moldovan side to sign the relevant intergovernmental agreement in the near future and to start construction of the bridge.
This was stated by Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Kistion on the outcomes of the meeting dedicated to the said issue, which was held with the participation of central and local executive in Kyiv on August 21.
The most direct route from the capitals of the Baltic states to Bucharest, Sofia, Athens or Istanbul is the road through Kyiv and Chisinau. And between these capitals the shortest way is the highway through Yampil, Vinnytsia region.
"However, ferry connection which is no longer in line with modern requirements and real needs still exists between the two European countries in the border areas of Yampil-Cosăuți. The construction of a modern bridge is enshrined in the National Transport Strategy up to 2030. This demonstrates a "political will" of Ukraine to implement this project", the Vice Prime Minister emphasized.
