  • Volodymyr Kistion: Ukraine demonstrates European pace of road repairs
Service of the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, posted 12 September 2018 14:08

Ukraine demonstrates the European pace of development of road industry this year. If in September 2016 the percentage of road repairs was only 14%, thus at the beginning of the autumn this year, it makes up 63%. In Europe - it is 70%. Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Kistion stated during the Government session.

According to him, due attention has not been given to the road facilities for years, however over the two and a half year, the incumbent Government managed to make the impossible possible - to conduct major repairs of almost 5 thousand kilometers of roads.

"Winter is coming. Therefore, in the near future, it is necessary to conduct an inventory, and possibly new purchases of both equipment and anti-icing materials. The poor maintenance of roads in the autumn-winter period leads to serious losses and negates gains achieved in the previous six months. We should demonstrate citizens that we can not only repair roads properly, but also to effectively maintain them", the Vice Prime Minister claimed, addressing the Ukravtodor.

Concerning the purchase of new equipment for the maintenance of Ukrainian roads, the Vice Prime Minister recommended Ukravtodor to redistribute funds in such a way to ensure regions with the most severe winter conditions will get the largest amount of funding. He emphasized the importance of strengthening road safety measures.

Volodymyr Kistion also recalled two credit portfolios – from Hungary and Poland worth 150 million euros. Today, these funds remain in limbo due to the weak organizational capacity of state authorities.

Apart from that, the Vice Prime Minister drew attention to the roads that connect the regional centers. "These roads stay on the state balance and resources allocated to the regions can not be subject to funding of these roads. Therefore, it is necessary to shortly  complete the transfer of roads connecting regional centers to  local authorities in order to ensure their major overhaul next year ", Volodymyr Kistion underscored.
