  • Government embarks on shaping a roadmap for climate change

On August 27, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources together with Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Infrastructure, Ministry of Economy, Ministry for Communities and Territories Development and the Government Office for Coordination of European and Euro-Atlantic Integration begas a process of shaping a roadmap of key transformations and measures to implement the updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement.

Its concept was presented to Ukrainian government officials today by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Roman Abramovsky. This is one of the next steps in the implementation of the renewed NDCs to the Paris Agreement, which was approved by the Government in late July.

The meeting participants focused on the methodology of forming an action plan for the implementation of the renewed NDC, a calendar plan for its implementation and proposals for it.

"Today, one of the main tasks of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources in the field of climate change is to develop an operational action plan to implement the renewed NDC to the Paris Agreement, to strengthen internal coordination and monitoring of climate goals, and to expand cooperation with international financial organizations and partners. After all, both the Government and our international partners must clearly understand how Ukraine will achieve its climate goals and what support we need for this. That is why we are starting work on a detailed plan and specific transformation projects," Roman Abramovsky stressed.

Iryna Stavchuk, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine for European Integration, presented the methodology for forming an action plan for the implementation of the NDC to the Paris Agreement and key transformations.

According to the Deputy Minister, at first, the plan should be generally aggregated for all sectors, which are presented in the updated  NDC to the Paris Agreement and the results of the EBRD modeling. Then, based on these measures, priority key transformations will be formed, which the country must complete by 2030.

The officials agreed to form a package of proposals for a draft operational action plan to implement the NDC to the Paris Agreement in the near future.
