At a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on July 8, Taras Kremin was selected through preferential voting to serve as the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language.
Pursuant to the requirements of Article 49 of the Law of Ukraine "On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language", three candidates - Svitlana Bronikova, Taras Kremin and Sviatoslav Litynsky – had been nominated for the position of the State Language Protection Commissioner by the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Justice and the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights. They participated in the meeting of the Government on July 8, where they had the opportunity to address the members of the Cabinet and answer their questions.
As required by the current legislation, the winner of the competition was selected from three candidates by open personal voting of members of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in the absence of candidates for the position of Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language. Taras Kremin won the preferential voting.
Under the law, the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language is elected for a term of five years. After the expiration of this term, the powers of the Commissioner shall be terminated from the moment of adoption of the relevant decision by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. A person may be reappointed to the position of the Commissioner, but cannot hold the position for the third time.
