On April 20, the UN Economic and Social Council elected Ukraine to the UN-Women Executive Board for 2022-2024 and re-elected our country to the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) for a three-year term.
Ukraine's election to the UN-Women governing body is yet another testimony of our country's adherence to a strategic course on ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men at the national and international levels. As a member of the Executive Board Ukraine will continue to strengthen women's leadership and promote women's participation in political processes, in particular in the context of the implementation of the "Women and Peace and Security "agenda. For the last time Ukraine was represented in the UN-Women Executive Board in 2011-2013.
The key task of Ukrainian membership in the Executive Board of UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS will be to increase the UN development system’s efficiency, to provide assistance to member states for economic post-pandemic recovery.
Ukraine is one of the thirty countries where the largest UN-supported projects are being implemented. Our state is particularly interested in ensuring that the UN's operational activities are effective, efficient and results-oriented, as well as in eliminating duplication and avoiding gaps in the interaction of agencies in the host countries.
Over the next few years, UN agencies in Ukraine will continue to assist the Government of Ukraine in overcoming the negative socio-economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. Other areas of enhanced cooperation will be the development of democratic governance, sustainable economic growth, employment, green energy, and modern technologies.
These projects are implemented within the UN Partnership Framework between the Government of Ukraine and the United Nations for the period of 2018-2022 with a budget of $667 million.
United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) was established by UN General Assembly Resolution 64/289 on 2 July 2010. The purpose of UN-Women is to accelerate the achievement of UN goals in the field of gender equality and women's empowerment, in particular through the implementation of policies, global standards and norms in this area, providing technical and financial assistance to member-states in implementing these norms, strengthening the effective cooperation with civil society, etc.
