Ukrainian delegation met with new European Commissioner for Energy
Within the framework of the 10th Session of the IRENA Assembly, a Ukrainian delegation led by Minister of Energy and Environmental Protection Oleksiy Orzhel met with EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson.
Minister Oleksiy Orzhel thanked EU Commissioner Kadri Simson for her support in the tripartite gas talks. After all, the transit of gas via the territory of Ukraine became the key to the energy stability of both our state and the EU. Europe has recently adopted A Green Deal and set an ambitious goal of becoming a climate-neutral continent. That is why the EU is paying particular attention to the development of RES (renewable energy sources). Ukraine, in turn, is also working on a green energy transition concept and planning to introduce a CO2 tax, thereby increasing investment into energy efficient measures.
“Following the negotiations on gas transit, Ukraine can focus on the energy of the future, the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency. The EU will support it,” said EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson. The Commissioner also thanked Minister Oleksiy Orzhel for his constructive stance in the gas negotiations.
As a reminder, since December 1, 2019, Kadri Simson replaced Maroš Šefčovič as a Commissioner. Prior to that, the Estonian politician was the Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure of Estonia in the government of Jüri Ratas.
