Ukrainian biomethane could become part of Europe’s new energy security architecture
Biomethane could serve as a tool for restructuring Europe’s gas market, according to Mykola Kolisnyk, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine, speaking at the international conference “Biomethane in Ukraine: Opportunities and Development.”
“Europe and Ukraine are at a turning point in reshaping energy security strategies. Some European countries still import russian gas. Biogases, as part of the ‘green transformation,’ are a component of the continent’s energy security. This is a path to replacing russian gas with biomolecules – ’green’ molecules. Ukraine, with its immense biomethane potential, can help Europe achieve its goals under the ‘Fit for 55’ strategy and the ‘RePowerEU’ programme,” Mykola Kolisnyk noted.
In February 2025, Ukraine exported biomethane to the EU via pipeline for the first time. The Government developed and adopted a legislative and regulatory framework for the production, certification, and export of biomethane, and coordinated technical procedures with the Gas Transmission System Operator, Ukrtransgaz, and gas distribution network operators.
Mykola Kolisnyk highlighted the importance of cooperation with the EU in data and technology exchange and accelerating integration into a unified European database. He stressed the need for market players to access EU financial instruments and attract international investments to develop biomethane in Ukraine.
The Deputy Minister thanked Ukrainian biomethane producers for their active and effective work, as well as the European Commission, the EU Delegation to Ukraine, the Energy Community Secretariat, and the UK Government for their expertise and political support.
