  • Ukraine and Moldova continue environmental cooperation and move closer to EU

Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strilets met with the new Minister of Environment of Moldova Sergiu Lazarencu and congratulated his colleague on the appointment.

“Today we are walking side by side on the European integration path. The joint work of our teams and the exchange of experience will allow us to go through it quickly and efficiently,” said Ruslan Strilets.

The Ministers exchanged views on the conclusion of a bilateral agreement on the implementation of the Espoo Convention and the strengthening of cross-border cooperation between the two countries. They agreed to scale up the Ukrainian EcoThreat app and supplement it with monitoring data from Moldova. The parties discussed further steps to implement the inter-ministerial Declaration on the management and rational use of the Prut River Basin signed in autumn 2023 by Ukraine, Moldova and Romania. The next step is to set up a working group within the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River.

“Moldova was one of the first countries to join our international track of the Volodymyr Zelenskyy Peace Formula and to work together under Point 8 on environmental security. In June this year, Ukraine will initiate the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland, where we will have the opportunity to strengthen our peace track and engage even more allies. The support of partners like Moldova is very important. I thank Moldova for its support for Ukraine and its steadfast position on russian armed aggression. I am waiting for my colleague Sergiu Lazarencu in Kyiv. I believe that our cooperation will be strengthened with each new initiative,” Ruslan Strilets emphasised.
