More than 5,000 tonnes of energy equipment have been delivered to Ukraine from partners - the European Union, its member states and their companies - to support the energy sector. The Ukraine Energy Support Fund, established at the initiative of the European Commission, is currently procuring much-needed equipment worth more than EUR 110 million.
This was stated by Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko in a statement at the EU-Ukraine Summit held on February 3, in Kyiv.
"We appreciate the positive assessment of our progress in the energy sector by the European Commission. We see European integration as a way to strengthen the stability and resilience of our energy system. We are making active efforts to integrate our energy markets. Moreover, Ukraine will become one of the largest European energy hubs," the Minister of Energy emphasized.
German Galushchenko also noted that Ukraine had an extensive and flexible gas transportation system and the largest underground gas storage facilities in Europe.
"We also have a powerful hydroelectric storage infrastructure, and in combination with other electricity storage technologies, we should also become a hub for its accumulation. Given the expected shortage of electricity in Europe, Ukraine will help balance the European energy system," added German Galushchenko.
Attention to nuclear energy is also important, as Ukraine is the first country in the world to diversify its nuclear fuel supplies away from russian fuel and is now sharing its experience with other partner countries.
"This is our contribution to reducing the world's dependence on nuclear energy from a terrorist state. We will develop green energy to be integrated into the European economy. In particular, this year we plan to commission up to 500 MW of capacity. The resilience of the energy system will also be increased through decentralization and energy efficiency. Ukraine is already contributing to the energy security of Europe. Let's keep working!" summarized German Galushchenko.
