Ukraine and Canada sign Joint Statement on Deepening Energy Cooperation
In Calgary, First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal took part in a meeting between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney.
“Canada is one of Ukraine’s key partners in energy security. Our strategic areas of cooperation include developing the nuclear fuel cycle, deploying Canadian small modular reactor (SMR) technologies, restoring power grids and gas production infrastructure, introducing digital solutions, and strengthening the cyber protection of energy facilities,” noted Denys Shmyhal.
According to the Minister of Energy, the meeting addressed urgent support needed by Ukraine in preparation for winter.
“We have a substantial support package. We are grateful to Canada for its unwavering support for Ukraine and its significant contribution to strengthening our country’s energy resilience,” said Denys Shmyhal.
As part of the visit, First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson, in the presence of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney, signed a Joint Statement on Deepening Energy Cooperation.
“Canada will provide Ukraine with CAD 757 million through the EBRD programmes to support emergency natural gas purchases and build up the necessary reserves ahead of winter. We welcome discussions on long-term agreements for Canadian LNG supplies to Ukraine,” stressed Denys Shmyhal.
The Minister of Energy also announced that Canada would contribute an additional CAD 10 million to the Energy Support Fund, bringing Canada’s total contribution to CAD 100 million.
In addition, Ukraine and Canada will expand strategic cooperation in nuclear energy. In particular, further partnership is envisaged between Energoatom and Cameco for long‑term uranium supplies and conversion services until 2035.
The Joint Statement also emphasizes the importance of continued cooperation in hydropower, renewable energy, and grid resilience. Denys Shmyhal reported that Export Development Canada is allocating CAD 200 million to support priority projects in Ukraine, including hydropower infrastructure. The parties will continue exchanging information and expertise on modernization of the power system, hydropower, energy storage technologies, infrastructure recovery, and strengthening grid resilience.
“Investment. We are expanding dialogue on the participation of the Canadian private sector in rebuilding Ukraine’s energy sector, particularly in energy equipment, engineering services, technical expertise, digital technologies, cybersecurity and operational resilience,” stated Denys Shmyhal.
The ministers will further take appropriate measures and identify practical opportunities for cooperation in the defined priority areas, implementing the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Cooperation in the Energy Sector signed in February 2026.
