  • Agreement on information security between the governments of Ukraine and Japan signed in the presence of the Prime Minister

    On 16 November, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Takeshi Iwaya met to discuss the prospects of Ukrainian-Japanese cooperation.

    “Japan is among the leaders in supporting Ukraine. The total amount of assistance has already reached USD 12.1 billion,” said Denys Shmyhal.

    The Head of Government stressed the importance of developing bilateral relations in various sectors.

    According to the Prime Minister, support for the energy sector is particularly important for Ukraine. He thanked the Japanese side for the energy equipment transferred and expressed hope for further assistance.

    Another key area of cooperation discussed during the meeting was humanitarian demining. In this regard, Japan is helping with demining equipment and vehicles, as well as funding training programmes for the State Emergency Service personnel. The Prime Minister stressed that Ukraine is grateful to the government and people of Japan for their assistance in this and other areas.

    “We appreciate Japan’s direct budgetary support, in particular the intention to allocate USD 3 billion from the use of frozen russian assets under the G7 initiative,” Denys Shmyhal said, adding that the two countries would continue to actively develop cooperation.

    The Prime Minister expressed special gratitude to Japan for imposing sanctions on russia.

    Takeshi Iwaya, for his part, assured that Japan would stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and do its utmost to help restore Ukraine through support from the public and private sectors.

    During the meeting, the parties also signed an agreement between the governments of Ukraine and Japan on information security. Its purpose is to create a legal framework for the exchange of information between the government agencies of the two countries.
