The Sheriff of Mine Action, a first-aid operator, will train veterans in mine action. Classes will be held in Kyiv and will last for 10 weeks. The first group of female and male veterans has already started training. We plan to recruit another group of students.
"As the Ministry of Economy, we are working to engage veterans in humanitarian demining more actively. These are people who are highly motivated to make our land safer and well aware of mine threats. Therefore, I welcome the initiative of one of the mine action operators, which, together with international partners, has launched a training programme," said Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine Ihor Bezkaravaynyi.
Upon completion of the training, the students will receive a state-issued certificate and assistance in finding a job.
One of the goals of the National Mine Action Strategy until 2033 is to increase the percentage of vulnerable groups, including veterans, involved in mine action.
In 2024, the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, together with the United Nations Development Programme, organised two training courses for veterans with disabilities, focusing on data analytics and working with mine action machines. More than half of the course participants found jobs in the field of MA, including in international demining organisations.
