  • russia should withdraw from the Danube Commission - decision of the 100th session

During its 100th session, the Danube Commission decided that russia should withdraw from the organisation by 29 February 2024. This was a consequence of the missile and drone attacks carried out by the russians on the Lower Danube in Ukraine. If russia fails to do so by the deadline, the member states of the Commission will no longer have any obligations towards russia under the Belgrade Convention.

"russia's cynical and brazen attacks on Ukraine's port infrastructure on the Danube cannot go unanswered. Such actions of the aggressor endanger not only the safety of navigation on the Danube, but also threaten the world with hunger. The Danube port cluster is now an alternative export route for Ukrainian food. russia should not have a vote in any international organisation, so I welcome the decision of the 100th session of the Danube Commission. Tough sanctions, including financial ones, will be a robust response to the aggressor for committing war crimes," commented Oleksandr Kubrakov, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine, Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine.

To recap, in March 2022, the Danube Commission suspended the powers of the rf representatives and expelled them from the Commission's secretariat. After the termination of russia's membership, the Commission will be composed of Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
