The Affordable Medicines program expanding: 37 new medications to be added starting in April
The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has approved an updated list of medications and medical devices eligible for reimbursement under the Affordable Medicines program. This is provided for by a corresponding order that takes effect on March 31.
The Affordable Medicines state reimbursement program allows patients to receive necessary medications free of charge or with a partial copayment using an electronic prescription. Starting in April, the program is expanding: 37 new medications in various dosages have been added to the list, including treatments for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and respiratory diseases.
In total, the updated program list includes 748 items, specifically:
- 621 medications
- 59 insulin preparations
- 32 combination drugs
- 36 types of medical devices (test strips for glucometers)
Expanding the program is one of the key steps toward improving access to treatment for patients with chronic diseases. Funding for the Affordable Medicines program increased by uAH 1.8 billion this year and now totals UAH 8.7 billion (UAH 6.9 billion in 2025). This will allow even more Ukrainians to receive necessary medications for free or with a partial copayment.
Since the beginning of 2026, more than 1.5 million patients have taken advantage of the Affordable Medicines program. During this time, more than 3.5 million prescriptions have been filled.
As a reminder, the fight against cardiovascular diseases—the leading cause of mortality in Ukraine—remains a state priority. That is why the program is being expanded to include medications that provide comprehensive treatment, particularly taking into account the co-occurrence of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory diseases.
In addition, the national Health Screening 40+ program was launched in Ukraine on January 1, 2026, providing basic screenings for the early detection of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and mental health disorders.
