Fellow Ukrainian citizens!
On behalf of the Government, I congratulate you on the Day of the National Emblem of Ukraine!
The Ukrainian trident embodies the connection of generations for us, the strive of the people to have their statehood. Having chosen the sign of the Princely State of Volodymyr the Great for a national symbol, Ukrainians have clearly identified their roots and historical succession of our state formations. Having the ancient princely emblem, we have paved the way during a thousand years, managed to preserve our national identity and to acquire an independent state. Therefore, the trident is not just our national coat of arms, it is an essential unifying element of national history, our present and future.
Under the shadow of the trident Ukrainians opposed the chauvinistic policy of the empires that tried to assimilate and even destroy the Ukrainian people. The trident and the yellow-and-blue banner became the state symbols of the newest independent state - the Ukrainian People's Republic. The trident was finally established as a state symbol of Ukrainians after Ukraine had gained independence in 1991.
On the patches of Ukrainian soldiers, who defend our country today from Russian aggression, again, like a century ago, a trident is entwined. Epochs and circumstances change, but Ukrainians remain united under their national symbols. And all of us must exert every effort to ensure that our trident is associated with the symbol of a successful, prosperous and just European state all over the world.
