russia is trying to undermine Ukraine's agricultural potential through massive mining of Ukrainian land, attacks on agricultural infrastructure, and the illegal export of Ukrainian grain from the temporarily occupied territories. This was emphasised by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at the opening of the Third International Food Security Summit, which is taking place in Kyiv on 23 November.
"These days, we honour the memory of the Holodomor victims, who had been killed by the Stalinist regime organised from moscow on our lands more than 90 years ago. And it is with pain that we say that now russia is doing the same thing, but on an even larger scale. We are here today to fight together against a global disaster - hunger. Ukraine, like no other country, understands the pain of people suffering from food shortages," said Denys Shmyhal.
The Prime Minister stressed that the aggressor sought to impede our agricultural exports in every possible way, and thus to condemn dozens of vulnerable countries to starvation.
"Fortunately, together with you - our friends and partners - we are successfully countering this strategy. Ukraine has already harvested its third crop during the full-scale war. This is more than 53 million tonnes of grain and legumes. The figures are not final, as the harvest is still ongoing. The harvest will be enough for domestic needs and for export as well," the Prime Minister said.
Denys Shmyhal emphasised that Ukrainian farmers were making a real feat to provide food for Ukraine and the world. And thanks to the Black Sea Logistics Corridor and other ways, Ukraine has restored its export capacity. Thus, in 10 months of 2024, more goods were exported than in the whole of last year.
"It is just food - oil, corn, wheat - which is the main product in the structure of export flows. We deliver products to more than 100 countries for more than 400 million people. These are mainly countries in Southeast Asia and Africa. In the medium term, there is every opportunity to double the volume of agricultural exports and provide food for up to 600 million people around the world," the Prime Minister stressed.
According to the Head of Government, the humanitarian programme Grain from Ukraine initiated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy is a vivid example of the world's effective goodwill and solidarity to help people. The previous two summits raised over USD 290 million in donor funds.
"Over the course of the programme, together with our partners, we have sent more than 280,000 tonnes of agricultural products to 12 countries in dire need. And I am grateful to all the countries that have joined the programme, who have made their contributions and who will do so in the future. Together we are doing one big thing for the sake of hundreds of thousands of people," said Denys Shmyhal.
