The issue of support for Ukraine is not a question of the position of each particular country or certain politicians, it is a matter of protecting shared values and norms of international law, in particular amid the period between the elections both in Ukraine and the European Union. Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman said during a meeting with Donald Tusk, President of the European Council.
This is the last visit of Donald Tusk to Kyiv as chairman of the European Council. Soon, the European Union shall announce new leaders of the leading European institutions - as is required by the principles of renewal of power following the European Parliament elections.
Yesterday, July 7, Donald Tusk visited Stanytsia Luhanska in which there is operating a checkpoint to cross the confrontation line. The infrastructure of the checkpoint was destroyed and threatens the lives of people who daily cross the border for both the controlled or uncontrolled by the Ukrainian authorities territories. Commenting on everything he had seen, Donald Tusk offered concrete assistance to this area. The Head of Government thanked for such attention to the situation in Donbas and stressed that among critical issues are not only humanitarian aid but also the preservation of a mechanism of retaliation for the aggressor who caused all that suffering. Therefore, preserving sanctions and the overall support of Ukraine in the context of restoring territorial integrity is an urgent and critical element of bilateral relations.
The Prime Minister emphasized that integration into the European Union is a strategic goal of Ukraine. "We laid the basis to provide transformations in the economy, the social sphere, we are striving to establish European standards of living within Ukraine. I consider we cannot deviate from this path", said Volodymyr Groysman. "It is essential at this transition stage of the change of power to ensure the irreversibility of the course towards European integration. For us, this is a fundamental direction."
In turn, Donald Tusk stressed, "There will be more challenges ahead for all of us - both for Ukraine and for the friends Ukraine in Europe. But we see that Ukraine demonstrates high political standards. And I want to note the personal role of the Head of Government in this process. I want to assure, I, personally, will always be with Ukraine and I will support Ukraine, no matter what posts I would hold in the future."
Donald Tusk stressed that he would remain a friend and ally of Ukraine.
"For me, you are all heroes", said Donald Tusk. "The EU should be grateful and proud of having such a partner like Ukraine."
