  • The first cubic meters of biomethane gas were pumped into the gas transportation system of Ukraine, says Mykola Solskyi

Ukraine has opened its first biomethane plant. Today, the first cubic meters of gas have been supplied to the gas distribution network. The plant will provide about 1,500 consumers per year.

According to Mykola Solskyi, Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Ukraine has great potential for biomethane production. Ukrainian farmers are keenly interested in developing this industry and willing to get involved. The construction of new facilities or re-equipment of existing ones will not only allow us to abandon gas imports, thus contributing to our energy security, but will also turn Ukraine into a reliable exporter of biomethane and ensure Ukraine's energy decentralization.

"The topic of biomethane is vibrant and interesting, and it's great that there are companies in Ukraine that are willing to join the development of this industry. I know that they have studied the European experience and familiarized themselves with the operation of biomethane plants in different countries. I am confident that this experience will be successfully implemented in Ukraine. For its part, the Ministry has contributed to the development of a legislative framework for the biomethane industry," emphasized Mykola Solskyi.

    Background

Biogas is the general name for a mixture of combustible gases obtained as a result of the natural decomposition of various organic substances - methane fermentation. Biomethane is purified biogas from food and livestock waste, sewage sludge and organic fraction of household waste that can be pumped into the Ukrainian gas transmission system and used as natural gas. Biomethane is an environmentally friendly gas and the cheapest renewable gas available.
