Olha Stefanishyna tells about the progress of implementing of European Commission’s recommendations

Ukraine demonstrates positive dynamics of implementation of recommendations of the European Commission, which are necessary for further advancement towards an EU membership following granting a candidate status. Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna emphasized during an online event organized by the New Europe Center.

“We understand the inclusion of certain recommendations was of a political nature, so they weren’t defined within the European Commission. Therefore, from the beginning of July we’ve launched bilateral consultations with the European Commission to develop understanding of what our shared vision of each particular recommendation should be. Hence, everything we are doing domestically complies with accords reached with the EU regarding each of the recommendations," explained the Deputy Prime Minister.

Commenting on certain recommendations’ implementation Olga Stefanishyna has noticed the progress in the adoption of legislation on media as the current law reflects the realities of the 1990s. “The compliance assessment of the text of the bill "About the Media" with the EU Directives was conducted . We believe the legislation will be approved by the parliament shortly so that we could start preparing it for the second reading”, said Olha Stefanishyna.

Regarding complying with the recommendations on the struggle against money laundering according to FATF standards, Ukraine and European Commission have identified the list of solutions being a priority for assessing Ukraine's progress. The government official said that the state authorities had already laid the necessary groundwork regarding relevant bills and bylaws.

Olga Stefanishyna has also emphasized the importance of appointment the head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, progress in launching the work of the Nominations Committee for the selection of the head of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the preparation of legislation on the election of judges of the Constitutional Court.

Alyona Getmanchuk, Director of the New Europe Center, noted when the EU had granted candidate status for Ukraine, actually the union had thrown the ball to the side of Ukraine. Moreover, she expressed beliefs that the implementation of recommendations of the European Commission will be a concerted play of both the Government and civil society.
