  • Oleksandr Kubrakov: Restoring the energy sector is the basis for economic sustainability

The restoration and protection of energy infrastructure facilities is a key condition for the restoration and functioning of the Ukrainian economy. This was stated by Oleksandr Kubrakov, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, during a meeting of the Steering Committee of the Multi-agency Donor Coordination Platform (MDCP) in Kyiv.

“After the russian massive air attacks, the energy infrastructure needs to be repaired and rebuilt as a priority. The situation in Kharkiv region is particularly difficult. We are counting on the support of our partners to restore generation capacities and continue the construction of passive protection for substations,” said Oleksandr Kubrakov in his speech.

The Deputy Prime Minister thanked the G7+ Energy Coordination Group for its strong support over the past year. In particular, the Coordination Group took part in the initial discussions on the restoration of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure after the russian attacks, and active cooperation is ongoing.

The MDCP Steering Committee meeting was attended by representatives of the Government of Ukraine, G7+ countries, and international financial institutions. Among the topics discussed during the Steering Committee meeting were the recovery of the private sector, business involvement in Ukraine’s recovery, the use of frozen russian assets, budget support, etc. The Ukrainian side proposed to organise the work of the MDCP technical secretariat directly in Kyiv to ensure high-quality sectoral coordination.

As a reminder, the Multi-agency Donor Coordination Platform was launched on 26 January 2023 at the inaugural meeting of its Steering Committee. The Committee brings together senior officials from Ukraine, the EU, the G7 countries, as well as partners from international financial institutions, including the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, to coordinate efforts in meeting Ukraine’s financing needs in both the short and medium term.
