The Government of Germany will allocate EUR 50 million for the restoration of the New Safe Confinement of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged by a
russian drone.

First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal expressed gratitude for this decision of the German Government and personally to Federal Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety of Germany Carsten Schneider.

“Yesterday, during our meeting in person, we discussed the possibility of securing funding. I thank Minister Schneider and the German delegation for their visit to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. We appreciate the swift decision to allocate the funds.
Restoring the Confinement is extremely important for ensuring the nuclear safety of Ukraine and all of Europe,” emphasized Denys Shmyhal.

It is envisaged that the German contribution will be transferred to the Chornobyl International Cooperation Account (CICA).

During their visit to the ChNPP, the German delegation inspected the New Safe Confinement Arch and its infrastructure, the new solar power plant on the industrial site of the ChNPP, and paid tribute to the liquidators of the disaster.

It should be recalled that the New Safe Confinement of the ChNPP was damaged by a russian drone strike in February 2025. According to preliminary estimates of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the cost of restoration amounts to about EUR 500 million.

Earlier, the European Commission, the United States, and the Kingdom of Norway declared their readiness to contribute to financing the restoration of the Confinement.
