August 14, Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Oleksandr Saienko chaired a meeting within the framework of the government initiative “Ukraine without smuggling” and in compliance with the moratorium on roundwood timber exports, which was dedicated to issues of inspections of state enterprises belonging to the sphere of State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine management and other state authorities and are engaged in logging and export of timber products.
The meeting was attended by First Deputy Minister of Food and Agricultural Policy of Ukraine Maxim Martynyuk, Head of the State Audit Service of Ukraine Lidiia Havrylova, Acting Head of State Fiscal Service of Ukraine Yevhen Bambizov, representatives of the State Service of Ukraine for Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre and National Police of Ukraine.
During the meeting, the attendees discussed issues pertaining to inspections of forestry enterprises, export-import operations with timber, illegal logging.
Oleksandr Saienko recalled that on July 23, Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman held a special meeting with the participation of heads of the State Fiscal Service, the National Police, the State Audit Service and Ukrzaliznytsia and he commissioned to monitor wood transportation and to unmask any shadow schemes of illegal export or import of timber products.
Apart from that, the National Police and State Fiscal Service have planned inspections of companies involved in export-import operations with wood to ensure that they are complying with legislative requirements.
In July 2018, Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman claimed that smuggling of forest, which has reached UAH 6-8 billion per year, will be traced along the whole chain, while cases on it will be made public and submitted to the Anticorruption Court, the establishment of which is underway.
The Head of Government added that a public report on the work done will be prepared.
