  • Ministry of Infrastructure: Ukraine averts the blocking of the Black Sea ports
Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, posted 15 February 2022 12:43

A corridor has been determined for the safe entry of merchant vessels into Ukrainian ports. Depth is confirmed at the level of 15-22.5 meters.

Special vessels of the State Hydrography SI carried out 450 kilometers of linear survey of the bottom structure in the Dniester Bank area in record time. Studies have confirmed the safety of navigation in the maritime corridor between the western border of the illegal training area of the Russian Federation and the Dniester Bank.

"Due to joint efforts and quick response, we have prevented the blocking of the Black Sea ports of Ukraine. The corridor determined by the research guarantees the ships safe passage through the Gulf of Odessa.

Over the past 24 hours, we have recorded uninterrupted traffic of merchant ships. Most of the ships followed the recommendations and used the sea corridor, bypassing the zone of illegal military exercises of the Russian Federation," said the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Oleksandr Kubrakov.

The current information on the results of hydrographic work of the State Hydrography SI has already been announced in the coastal warnings of Ukraine and will be published in the Reports for Sailors.

In order to help the captains to navigate the route of the ship more reliably, taking into account the floating draft and maneuvering characteristics, in the near future there will be made a large-scale insertion on the navigation maps with detailed information on the state of the depth of the sea corridor. The coordinates of the visual means of navigation equipment for clear delimitation of the sea corridor have been also determined.

It should be noted that in pursuance of the order of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine, SI State Hydrography carried out unscheduled survey works in the Dniester Bank to find safe passage for ships in connection with the Russian blockade of recommended sea routes to Odessa Gulf trading ports.

At the time of the study, the Ministry of Infrastructure recommended this route for merchant ships, which allowed Ukrainian ports to operate normally. The MV Melia was the first, but not the only, Panamax-type vessel to successfully navigate the new route from the Pivdenny Sea Port.
