The resolution on the safety and security of Ukraine’s nuclear facilities adopted by the UN General Assembly should accelerate the return of the Zaporizhzhia NPP to full control of Ukraine by russia.
This was emphasised by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko, commenting on the resolution, which was approved the day before by 99 UN member states.
“It is a major diplomatic victory for Ukraine that the UN General Assembly has approved a resolution on the importance of radiation and nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. I am grateful to the Ukrainian team headed by the President of Ukraine for their efforts and to our international partners for their consistent support of Ukraine. Only a united civilised world can win, defending the values of international law and democracy,” said the head of the Ministry of Energy.
The approved document confirms the need for demilitarisation and de-occupation of the plant, and this is another step towards the restoration of international law.
The resolution also calls on the russian federation to immediately remove all anti-personnel mines around the plant perimeter and to support the IAEA and its mission to ZNPP in terms of timely and full access to all areas of the plant.
In addition, the resolution calls for an immediate cessation of attacks by the russian federation against Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure, which increases the risk of a nuclear disaster, accident or incident at all nuclear facilities in Ukraine.
“Every day that unlicensed russian personnel and the russian military stay at the plant puts the whole world at risk of a nuclear incident. The terrorist country russia must immediately leave the Zaporizhzhia NPP and return the plant under the full control of the Ukrainian authorities, which can ensure safety at the facility,” said German Galushchenko.
