Grain Initiative: the third vessel charted by the UN is on its way to Africa aiming to fight hunger

Today, the IKARIA ANGEL bulk carrier, chartered by the UN World Food Program (WFP), left the Chornomorsk Sea Port. More than 30,000 tons of wheat are on its board.

The vessel is headed for Ethiopia. According to UN estimates, Ethiopia is on the verge of a food crisis.

"According to UN estimates, 70 million socially vulnerable people in the world, and especially in Africa and Asia, are on the brink of starvation because of the full-scale invasion of Russia. Although these people became hostages of the enemy, we are doing our best to improve the humanitarian situation in the world.

In partnership with the UN World Food Program, three ships loaded with more than 90 thousand tons of wheat are on its way to the people of Ethiopia and Yemen. We plan to export another 190,000 tons, which are currently being purchased by UN partners.

We call on our other international partners, and private investors to join the procurement of food for the needs of Africa. Our ports are ready to promptly receive and load ships to save the world from hunger," Oleksandr Kubrakov, Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine said.

Besides IKARIA ANGEL and another 9 vessels have left Ukrainian ports today.

Within the Initiative on the safe transportation of agricultural products, 23 vessels have already left Ukrainian ports for African countries. On its board are 0.64 million tons of food.

In general, 159 vessels have left Ukrainian ports with 3.6 million tons on its board.
