GLOBSEC-2025: Humanitarian demining in Ukraine discussed at the security forum
Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine Ihor Bezkaravaynyi took part in the event “Mine Action: Global Agenda” at the 20th GLOBSEC Forum in Prague. During the discussion, he shared how Ukraine's experience can be useful for other countries affected by mines and other remnants of war. Participants also shared a vision of global coordination in mine action and how to raise funds more effectively in the sector amid shrinking resources.
"In Ukraine, mine action is not just about deminers with metal detectors. The challenge we faced made us approach the problem of contaminated land in a more comprehensive way. We are using AI to build a system for prioritizing and analyzing satellite images, and using UAVs to conduct not only visual inspections but also to find mines and explosive ordnance in the grass and buried underground. We are updating the standards to meet the needs that exist now. We do this because it depends on whether people will live on safe land. We are ready to share our experience with the international community and look for solutions together," said Igor Bezkaravaynyi during the event.
Within the framework of GLOBSEC, Ihor Bezkaravaynyi met with the Vice-President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (hereinafter - OSCE PA) and Special Representative on Fighting Corruption Irene Charalambides. The parties discussed humanitarian demining, recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine after the russian aggression, cooperation in anti-corruption policy and international support.
"The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly stands with Ukraine. We are determined to support your sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as to contribute to the recovery and future of Ukraine through parliamentary diplomacy and practical cooperation," said Irene Charalambides.
The OSCE PA Vice-President emphasized the importance of anti-corruption efforts in the context of reconstruction.
"After every war, the risk of corruption increases. We must work together to increase transparency, accountability and good governance to ensure that international assistance brings maximum benefit to the Ukrainian people," said Irene Charalambides.
