Denys Shmyhal holds meeting with Atlantic Council delegation

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with a delegation from the Atlantic Council, led by John Herbst. The discussion covered the current situation in Ukraine’s energy system following russia’s missile and drone attacks, the vertical gas corridor utilising Ukrainian gas storage facilities, and continued work on projects in cooperation with the United States.

Denys Shmyhal recalled that, according to the latest World Bank estimates, the needs for restoring the energy sector amount to USD 90.6 billion.

“Ukraine requires foreign investment for recovery and modernisation. Promising projects include decentralised generation, nuclear energy, and the development of cogeneration,” noted the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy.

The Head of the Ministry of Energy reported that work is currently under way with the World Bank on an updated Energy Strategy, which will set out a new vision for the sector’s development. He stressed that the Ministry is counting on close and fruitful cooperation with the Atlantic Council.

Denys Shmyhal also thanked John Herbst and the other members of the Atlantic Council delegation for their visit to Kyiv during this difficult time for Ukraine, and for their ongoing support on international platforms. He further emphasised that russia must be held accountable for its attacks on heat and electricity infrastructure amid severe frosts.
