The Government is to develop an annual gas product when the price of gas for consumers is fixed for a year. This will protect citizens from unpredictable growth. This was stated by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on the air of the program "Snidanok z 1+1" (Breakfast with 1 + 1 – ed.) on January 15.
"The state enterprise Naftogaz and other gas suppliers will calculate the price of their annual products and offer Ukrainians a fixed price," the Head of Government said.
According to the Prime Minister, last autumn, tens of thousands of Ukrainians have already signed annual contracts for gas supplies at a price of UAH 4.70 per cubic meter. He added that this principle applies in most European countries, and people can choose a fixed price for a year or a month.
Denys Shmyhal reminded that last year the gas market had started operating in Ukraine and it is the exchange that regulates prices. However, according to him, there is abuse in the market, hence, the Government will limit the marginal price for gas so that certain companies that have a monopoly position in the regions do not inflate the price and do not manipulate prices in utility bills.
"The Government has decided to fix the upper limit of the gas price not higher than UAH 6.99 per cubic meter. This is the market, this is the price of gas in the market, but the upper limit cannot exceed this figure. This price will be valid for the quarantine period or until the end of the heating season, i.e. at least until April. Aftermath we will see how the situation will develop. Probably, the price will go down sharply, then we will lift this restriction," the Prime Minister stressed.
The Head of Government also added that the Antimonopoly Committee and the relevant ministries had been commissioned to investigate abuses in the gas market and take appropriate measures.
In addition, as Denys Shmyhal noted, the Government together with the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada worked on the legislative regulation of the issue of gas distribution tariff, as it is set by local supply companies and approved by the NEURC.
"We want the distribution tariff to be fair for all people. There are mechanisms in place for that and lawmakers in the Parliament are ready to support such an initiative," the Head of Government stressed.
