
CMU appointed Government Commissioner for Gender Equality Policy
Cabinet of
Ministers of Ukraine appointed Kateryna Levchenko as the Government Commissioner for Gender
Equality Policy. The position of the Government Commissioner for Gender
Equality Policy was introduced on June 7, 2017. In December Kateryna
Levchenko became the winner of the competitive
selection.
The main
tasks of the Government Commissioner for Gender Equality Policy encapsulate
coordination of the work of ministries, other central and local executive bodies
to ensure equal rights and opportunities for women and men, conducting the
monitoring of the accounting by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine the
principle of gender equality, assistance in developing state programs on gender
equality and cooperation with international organizations and civil society.
The
oversight of the implementation of the United Nations Security Council
Resolution 1325 (S/RES/1325), on women, peace, and security aimed at addressing
gender issues at all stages of the peace process, including peacekeeping,
world-building and post-conflict reconstruction will become one of the vital
tasks of the Commissioner.
The Commissioner
is subordinated to the line Vice Prime Minister. Last year, the Government of
Ukraine, for the first time in the history, outlined gender equality as one of
its priorities, imposing responsibilities for the implementation of state
policy in this sphere on the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic
Integration of Ukraine Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze.
In turn, the Vice Prime Minister stressed the establishment of the said
institution is of utmost importance for the purposeful implementation of
numerous tasks in the field of gender equality, the implementation of existing
work and the provision of a systematic approach to the process of gender
equality.
