Volodymyr Groysman: Low or economically unjustified gas tariffs is a source for large-scale corruption

Bringing gas prices to economically justified level will enable to root out large-scale corruption in this sphere. This was stated by Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman on air of 24 Channel on Wednesday, April 20.

"Low or economically unjustified rates is a source for corruption. This is dozens hundreds of billions that were plundered by different people. When gas for one category [people – ed.] is sold at 3 thousand, for another [industrial entrepreneurs- ed.] – 7 thousand, I can assure you that they sell illegally at 7 thousand, but indicate funds amounting 3 thousand – the price for the population. They earn billions this way".

Regarding the prospective increase in gas price, Volodymyr Groysman announced: "There are commitments which the Ukrainian side signed that the gas tariffs will comply 100% with the cost. There is no other option".

The Government, particularly Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine Andrii Reva, have embarked on finding the solution aimed at minimization of any adverse impact of such a decision on the citizens, said the Prime Minister.

“Another thing is how to build social justice here, how to protect those who have low income, even when price is increased to the economically grounded, against shocks. That’s what counts today", said the Prime Minister. He reassured that the Cabinet of Ministers would find "compensatory mechanisms" to resolve this problem.

However, the Head of Government emphasized that the cooperation plan with the International Monetary Fund is a plan of reforms, allowing to transform the system in the country, to ensure economic growth, which will be converted into decent living standards of Ukrainian citizens.
