On Tuesday, November 10, the Parliament approved law No. 2540a "On amendments to the Criminal Procedural Code of Ukraine regarding certain issues of seizure of property aimed at eliminating corruption risks in the process of application of it". 291 MPs supported the law.

Before the vote, Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk stressed: "There is no doubt that everyone wants Ukrainian citizens could get a visa-free regime. And for this purpose the Parliament together with the Government are vigorously working to enact appropriate laws," he said.

However, the Head of Government stressed that the legal analysis indicates that the bill does not comply with European legislation: "Unless the adopted law complies with European legislation it will become a prerequisite for not giving a free visa regime for Ukraine".

He noted that the Parliament members didn’t demonstrate complete unity concerning the withdrawal of amendments, "which introduced significant changes in the anti-corruption laws and deprive law enforcement agencies of a function of combating corruption".

Following the vote on this bill, he stressed, there would be provided a legal conclusion of the European Union: "If in compliance with this legal report the law [which was adopted] isn’t approved by the European Commission as the law harmonizing with the European legislation, then the President of Ukraine shall make appropriate proposals to the Parliament or we will vote again on this bill in order to obtain a visa-free regime".
