Gov't appoints Khatia Dekanoidze to chair the National Police of Ukraine

A former adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs Khatia Dekanoidze has become the chief of the National Police of Ukraine. She was introduced by the Prime Minister of Ukraine on the proposal of the Minister of Internal Affairs at a special Government session on Wednesday, November 4.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk noted that this decision is "a landmark decision for the new Ukrainian police".

The Head of the Government reminded that Khatia Dekanoidze in a team with the Interior Minister and his First Deputy Eka Zguladze "elaborated the whole package of changes and made first steps in the establishment of the patrol force in the country": "The fourth member of the team is Olexandr Fatsevych, who chairs the Department of the patrol police of Ukraine".

Arseniy Yatsenyuk noted a personal role of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov in the creation of the new police force, who could "have made the Soviet militia pass into history and launched in Ukraine a national police of the European model".

The Minister of Internal Affairs, according to the Prime Minister, could have managed to convince the Parliament to adopt the necessary laws and have made the success possible: he gathered a team of true reformers within the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk also assured he had had talks on the appointment of a chief of the National Police with the President of Ukraine: "The President supports this initiative."
