Arseniy Yatsenyuk: Berlin Wall was destroyed and there will never appear another Berlin Wall in Europe

On Wednesday, May 28, in Berlin Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk met with Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel in the framework of joint negotiations with the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili and Prime Minister of Moldova Yuri Lianke.

Before the meeting Arseniy Yatsenyuk stressed that the security situation in Ukraine remained difficult. He expressed assurance that the authorities had in possession all the possibilities to stabilize the situation within the country: “However, such stabilization depends on the position of one of the neighboring states to Ukraine. We strongly believe that all the countries must stick to their international commitments and it especially applies to Russia”.  

“We are facing huge security challenges. The Berlin Wall was destroyed and there will never appear another Berlin Wall in Europe,” the Head of Government emphasized.

With regards to energy challenges, according to him, the answer to them Ukraine and the EU “will be seeking together”: “As it concerns not just energy security of Ukraine, but energy security of the European Union and applying transparent, fair, open market-driven rules in the energy market”.

He highlighted the policy of the European Union to gradually design a single energy policy “appears correct response to all the challenges”: “Ukraine, being a member of Energy Charter Treaty and the Energy Community as well, is ready to contribute to real energy independency of European continent”.

“A European prospect for Ukraine is what Ukrainian people are striving for,” Arseniy Yatsenyuk said and emphasized, Ukraine could have signed a political section of the Association Agreement with the European Union due to the personal assistance of the Federal Chancellor and the EU member states.

The Head of Government stressed that Ukraine had held fair, transparent and democratic presidential elections: “A legitimate Head of state has been elected in the first round”.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk emphasized the Ukrainian party evaluates the position of Germany and the European partners demonstrated in supporting of the elections’ process, sending “an observer mission, who have acknowledged the elections as corresponding to all the democratic standards”: “We expect that all the countries, including members of the UN Security Council, will acknowledge the elections in Ukraine and lawfully elected President of Ukraine”.

“We are convinced in our goals. Our target is to make Ukraine a European country. Having the new President, the Government and the Parliament will fulfill everything the Ukrainian people expect. And the Ukrainian people are waiting for the changes,” the Prime Minister stressed.

On behalf of the Government of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk thanked Germany for the distinct position in supporting the democratic transformations in Ukraine: “We value this and hope for further support. In synergy we will definitely have a successful history of European future”.
