The European Union has officially announced its intention to allocate nearly EUR 1.9 billion for military support to Ukraine. This was stated by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. In particular, a ceremony took place in Lviv to sign an Agreement on the disbursement of the second tranche of profits from frozen russian assets, involving the European Union, the Kingdom of Denmark, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the French Republic, and the Italian Republic.
“This is a historic decision, as weapons for Ukraine will be purchased using profits from frozen russian assets through the European Peace Facility,” Denys Shmyhal emphasised. He noted that EUR 1 billion of the allocated funds will be directed towards purchasing weapons under the so-called “Danish model” – directly from Ukrainian manufacturers, which not only strengthens defence capabilities but also stimulates the economy and innovation in the defence industry. Additionally, according to the Prime Minister, over EUR 600 million will be allocated for artillery and ammunition, and more than EUR 200 million for enhancing Ukrainian air defence.
“We sincerely thank the European Union for this forward-thinking decision, leadership, and support. Special gratitude goes to Denmark, France, the Netherlands, and Italy, which will facilitate the purchase of Ukrainian weapons worth EUR 1 billion. Together, we are strong. Together, we will ensure a just peace for Ukraine and security for all of Europe,” Denys Shmyhal stressed.
