Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko participated in the third meeting on the implementation of the Ukrainian Peace Formula of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the level of national security and foreign policy advisors, which took place in Malta. The Ukrainian delegation was led by Andriy Yermak, Head of the Presidential Office, on behalf of Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting was attended by representatives of 66 states and international organisations.
Nuclear and radiation safety was one of the points of the Peace Formula discussed during the meeting.
“It was particularly important for me to present the nuclear and radiation safety plan. Its goal is the complete withdrawal of russian military and civilian personnel, weapons and equipment from the territory of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and, accordingly, the transfer of control over the plant to Ukraine,” the head of the Ministry of Energy said.
German Galushchenko noted that the events of 25 October, when russia struck near the Khmelnitskyi NPP, showed once again that russia’s military actions in Ukraine threatened not only radiation and nuclear safety in the world, but also the development of nuclear energy.
“Our plan provides for strengthening the role of the IAEA in monitoring compliance with the rules of operation of nuclear facilities, determining the technical conditions for the safe return of the ZNPP to Ukrainian control, and studying the mechanisms of responsibility for failure to comply with the internationally recognised principle of nuclear safety,” the Minister stressed.
German Galushchenko thanked all partner countries participating in the working group on radiation and nuclear safety for the implementation of the Peace Formula, highlighting the special role of the group’s co-chairs – the Czech Republic and France.
“The work on the implementation of the Peace Formula is about responsibility, consolidation and mutual understanding for the sake of well-being and peace in the world,” the Minister concluded.
