The Eighth Meeting of the States Parties to the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic area (ACCOBAMS) was held in St. Julian's City, Republic of Malta.
As a result of consideration of the Ukrainian issue on the consequences of russian military aggression for the cetaceans in the Black and Azov Seas, the States Parties to the Agreement decided to create a separate declaration recognizing the negative impact of russian aggression on protected cetacean species and the damage caused by the hostilities within the internationally recognized borders and waters of Ukraine.
Ukraine's position was supported by France, on behalf of the EU member states that are members of ACCOBAMS (including Italy, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta, Slovenia, Greece), as well as Monaco and Georgia.
"The unjustified act of aggression and barbaric destruction of wildlife are in step with russia not only on land but also at sea. Restoration of the pre-war population of cetaceans in the Ukrainian seas will take decades. We must draw international attention to this problem in order to achieve the goals of the Agreement. And this is, first of all, ensuring the living conditions of cetaceans and minimizing the impact of human activity on their habitat. We must use all available platforms for the fastest possible post-war restoration of the environment, and, in the context of ACCOBAMS - populations of cetaceans internationally recognized as "rare" or "critically endangered", the Ukrainian delegation said in its address to the participating countries.
The representatives of Ukraine also informed the participants of the Agreement about the possibility of joining the creation of a center for rehabilitation and adaptation of cetaceans affected by the russian invasion.
