  • Valeria Kolomiets: While the Armed Forces protect us on the frontline, our duty is to punish the aggressor on the legal front
Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, posted 13 July 2022 10:12

Currently, five interstate cases of Ukraine against the russian federation are pending before the European Court of Human Rights: as for Crimea, Donbas, sailors, systematic political murders, and illegal invasion of the territory of our state, informed Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine for European Integration Valeria Kolomiets.

«Following armed aggression in the south and east of Ukraine dating back to 2014, the russian federation launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. On June 23, 2022 the Ministry of Justice submitted a new application against russia to the ECtHR. In the application, Ukraine accuses the russian authorities of violations of the European Convention on Human Rights in connection with the illegal invasion of the sovereign territory of Ukraine. Ukraine's application is aimed at the earliest possible termination of the terrible and massive human rights violations committed by russia and is filed in the interests of both individuals and legal entities that have suffered as a result of russia's aggressive actions in Ukraine», noted Valeria Kolomiets.

The submitted document concerns russia's flagrant human rights violations at the initial stage of the war: from the morning of February 24 to April 7, 2022 - the date of the actual withdrawal of russian ground troops from around Kyiv and other cities in the north of our country. Russia’s violations in the period thereafter will be addressed by Ukraine in subsequent filings.

In addition to the complete withdrawal of russian troops from the territory of Ukraine, we demand compensation. In the first phase of the russian military invasion, the damage amounted to at least 80 billion US dollars.

«Obviously, in order to bring the russian federation to justice in the European Court of Human Rights, we need evidence: videos, photos and records of violations committed by invaders on our land. That is why, for the effective collection and processing of information on human rights violations by the russian federation, we created a web platform humanrights.gov.ua, as well as the Warcrime chatbot, which collects messages about the specified violations, captures, murders, destruction, torture, bombings, etc. So everyone who has suffered from the actions of the occupiers can apply and tell their own truth that the whole world will hear. No testimony should be left out! While the Armed Forces protect us on the front line, our duty is to punish the aggressor on the legal front!», emphasized Deputy Minister.
