"Currently, a number of renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 2.5 GW are being implemented in Ukraine. This is the highest performance in all the years of independence of our country. The sum worth $ 4.8 billion has been invested in this area over the past 5 years," said Oleksiy Honcharuk during a meeting with Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
The Head of the Ukrainian Government emphasized: "Our goal is to increase the share of bio energy. We are currently engaged in the development of a strategy for the transition to renewable energy up to 2050. We would greatly appreciate the cooperation with IRENA in this direction."
Mr. Francesco La Camera expressed support for the actions of the Ukrainian Government: "Ukraine is heading in the right direction. IRENA stands ready to support Ukraine in its efforts to develop a renewable energy system."
Apart from other things, the parties discussed the introduction of the system of auctions for the purchase of electricity produced from alternative energy sources to stimulate the development of renewable energy sector. The first auction is due in April 2020.
Finally, the Prime Minister of Ukraine thanked Francesco La Camera for his visit to Ukraine and expressed hope for a deeper cooperation between Ukraine and the Agency.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) - is an intergovernmental organisation founded in 2009 to support countries in their use of all forms of renewable energy. On February 24, 2018, Ukraine became a member of IRENA. As of June 26, 2019, Ukraine was elected to the IRENA Council's Program and Strategic Committee for 2019-2021 during the 17-th meeting of the IRENA Council. It was also agreed to include Ukraine in the Committee for the 10-th meeting of the IRENA Assembly.
