A meeting of the State Commission on Technogenic and Environmental Safety and Emergencies held on February 6 under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal discussed the consequences of a technological accident at Odesa’s energy facilities.

The Commission reviewed the implementation of a range of measures to ensure uninterrupted functioning of critical infrastructure and meet the priority needs of people.

“Last week, a large-scale technological accident occurred at one of the substations that supplied electricity to half a million people in Odesa district. We promptly issued the necessary orders to solve the problem. We managed to fully power up the critical infrastructure and partially restore electricity to people. Now we have to take the next steps to stabilize the situation as soon as possible,” said Denys Shmyhal.

According to the Ministry of Energy, over the past night the power supply duration was increased, yet consumption grew due to the start of the working week. Power engineers are working round the clock to repair the damaged substation.

Minister of Energy German Galushchenko also said that all the generators that were sent to Odesa have been delivered to the city. According to the Odesa Regional Military Administration, these are 82 diesel generators.

According to the Odesa Regional Military Administration, all centralized heating plants are powered and provide heat to 90% of residents. The remaining 10% are local boiler houses that operate on electricity. The Regional Military Administration emphasized that there were no houses with no heat supply around the clock. Water supply facilities are also functioning, in particular with the help of generators.

In addition, according to the Odesa Regional Military Administration, there are 342 Points of Invincibility in Odesa region, including 300 in Odesa.

The Prime Minister ordered additional generators to be brought to Odesa region until further stabilization of electricity supply. At its next meeting, the Government will also consider allocating funds for the Odesa Regional Military Administration to purchase fuel for generators.
