Energy storage facilities may be granted critical infrastructure status: Government decision

At the proposal of the Ministry of Energy, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has amended the list of critical infrastructure sectors, allowing facilities of electrical energy storage systems (battery stations) to be classified as critical infrastructure. The decision will help strengthen the protection of these facilities and improve the overall resilience of the power grid.

Energy storage systems are currently undergoing rapid development, especially in light of ongoing russian attacks on the energy sector. Currently, energy storage systems with a total capacity of over 500 MW have already been installed in Ukraine, and technical specifications have been issued for the installation of an additional 1,000 MW.

“Large battery stations help the power grid operate more stably, respond more quickly to load fluctuations, and reduce the risk of emergency blackouts. Therefore, our goal is to provide maximum protection for such facilities,” emphasized First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal.

The Government resolution shall ensure active protection of the relevant facilities within the framework of the national critical infrastructure protection system.
