The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has adopted an order on the priority of Ukrainian coal for electricity generation at thermal power plants (TPP), and approved a joint statement of the Governments of Ukraine and Germany on energy partnership.
At a Government meeting on Wednesday, June 17, the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, in particular, noted that almost every session the Government makes decisions that are bringing the Ukrainian energy sector out of the crisis gradually.
"We have already signed a memorandum with green energy producers, we have proposed a clear plan on how to improve the financial condition of both the energy market as a whole and Energoatom as a major player in the energy market ... Today we are approving a decision that coal will be the main fuel for electricity production. We buy imported gas, while our miners are out of work through the lack of the target market. This situation requires change. Certainly, we will support Ukrainian miners and preserve 20,000 jobs in this industry," said Denys Shmyhal.
In addition, at the meeting, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a joint statement of the Government of Ukraine and the Government of Germany on the establishment of energy partnership.
"I spoke about the relevant cooperation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during our talks in May. This will give impetus to our cooperation in the field of renewable energy development and energy efficiency. In addition, these agreements will provide us the opportunity to learn from Germany's experience in the fair transformation of coal regions," commented Denys Shmyhal.
