Government expands support for veterans and their families
The Government continues to create new opportunities for veterans and their families—ranging from housing assistance and compensation for vehicle retrofitting to the development of veteran-owned businesses and sports programs. This was announced by Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. The following areas of support for veterans and their families are being addressed.
1. More than 2,100 war veterans and families of fallen defenders are to receive housing payments
The Government has approved financial compensation payments under the Ministry for Veterans Affairs program totaling UAH 5.67 billion. This year, more than 2,100 Ukrainians with war-related disabilities (Groups I–II) and the families of those who gave their lives defending the Motherland will have the opportunity to purchase their own homes.
2. The process for receiving compensation for vehicle retrofitting for veterans with disabilities has been simplified.
Now, along with the application, it is possible to immediately submit information on the costs of vehicle modification and bank account details. Cases where a person resides outside their official place of registration have been addressed—in such cases, the application must be forwarded within three days. Decisions on compensation shall be made within five days of receiving the documents.
3. The system for granting war veteran status has been improved
The Ministry for Veterans Affairs will coordinate the monitoring of compliance with uniform rules when making decisions on the granting of war veteran status. This will help make the system more transparent and prevent unfair decisions. This refers to cases where a person may be unjustifiably denied status or, conversely, granted it unlawfully.
4. Intellectual property protection
From now on, veterans will pay reduced fees for registering inventions, trademarks, industrial designs, and other intellectual property.
In particular, the application process has been updated and digitized. Lower fees will apply for electronic applications. We support the development of small businesses and innovative projects that help veterans apply their military experience and skills.
5. Support for veteran sports programs
The Government has approved a plan for the training and participation of Ukrainian national veteran teams in international sports competitions.
A project to develop sports infrastructure for veterans is also being launched.
“Today, Ukraine has one of the largest veteran communities in the world. Sports are an important part of physical and psychological recovery and also help veterans return to active civilian life,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
