Waste Management: Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture strengthens cooperation with international partners
The Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine organized an online meeting between Deputy Minister Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi and representatives of the Swedish-Ukrainian program “Strengthening Municipal Waste Management in Ukraine” (WM4U), the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), and the EU4Green Recovery East Program.
The purpose of the meeting was to familiarize participants with the areas of international technical support aimed at reforming the waste management system in Ukraine, as well as to coordinate further joint steps.
During the discussion, international partners presented key components of support, including:
- development of national waste management policy;
- regional planning;
- implementation of a cluster approach;
- preparation of investment projects;
- strengthening institutional capacity and implementation of EU standards.
Special attention was paid to coordinating international assistance and ensuring a systematic approach to implementing reforms in the context of Ukraine’s European integration.
“Reform of the waste management sector is one of the key areas of environmental policy. It is important for us not only to resolve the accumulated problems with landfills and waste management, but also to build a modern system that meets EU standards. The support of international partners significantly strengthens our ability to introduce these changes,” noted Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi.
The Ministry emphasizes the importance of international support for modernizing the sector, particularly in addressing issues related to landfills, waste management, and the implementation of modern environmental solutions in accordance with EU legislation.

The Swedish-Ukrainian WM4U program, “Strengthening Municipal Waste Management in Ukraine,” aims to develop modern, systematic, and environmentally responsible solutions in the field of waste management at the local, regional, and national levels. The program is funded by the Swedish government through Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) and implemented by Avfall Sverige and SALAR International.
