Ukraine and the United Kingdom plan to expand cooperation in the energy sector. This was discussed during a meeting of First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko with Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce SMR Tom Samson. The parties discussed the supply of high-tech energy equipment to Ukraine, including the prospects of using small modular reactors (SMR).

“russia cannot defeat Ukraine on the battlefield, so it resorts to outright terrorist actions destroying Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Now we need help to restore energy supply so that Ukrainians are not left without heat and electricity in winter. Therefore, Ukraine is now interested in the supply of high-tech energy equipment, but we are also thinking about modernization of our generation,” said Yuliia Svyrydenko.

In turn, Rolls-Royce SMR CEO Tom Samson promised to help Ukraine with the supply of relevant equipment.

    For reference

Small modular reactors are a new promising technology for the use of nuclear energy. Their main differences from reactors at modern nuclear power plants are compact size and ability to produce a relatively small power output (from 30 MW to 500 MW). This allows to use them in small towns, at industrial sites or even during blackouts, providing parallel power supply to neighborhoods or entire cities.

Ukraine is interested in using new technologies for the production of small modular reactors (SMR) in Ukraine. The Ministry of Economy will facilitate conclusion of a relevant memorandum between Rolls-Royce SMR and Energoatom, setting parameters of cooperation in the implementation of this multi-year project.
