Ukraine has been and still remains a strong and reliable partner for the United States, hence there is a number of issues on the agenda of mutual cooperation, the solving of which is strategically important for both countries. Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman said during a meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell. This is the second meeting of the Prime Minister and Assistant Secretary of State for the past few months.
"Our cooperation is of strategic importance and rather crucial for our bilateral relations, especially at this historic time for Ukraine. We have a lot of points on our agenda that we are ready to discuss," stressed Volodymyr Groysman.
"Our support for Ukraine is very deep, and not just at the level of branches of power, but also the people of the USA. It is important for us to implement programs of support and protection, primarily in the defense sector, for Ukraine," said Wess Mitchell in turn. "We are also grateful to you, as the Prime Minister, for your leadership in the implementation of reforms."
During the negotiations, the parties discussed several topmost issues, in particular cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, counteraction to Russian aggression - including on the international arena, as well as mutual trade, especially in the context of restrictions on imports of steel products to the United States.
The Head of Government stressed that cooperation with international financial organizations is very important for Ukraine, notably with the view to the burden of debts taken before 2014. "The issue of financial stability is an important priority," said Volodymyr Groysman. "And here the cooperation with the IMF is of paramount significance."
He reminded that the negotiations with the Fund is being held along two directions - the establishment of an anti-corruption court, which sees the stage of adopting the necessary legal framework, and the introduction of a market formula for the price of gas for Ukrainian consumers. In the context of fuel prices, Prime Minister said that the Ukrainian side has its own solution, and support by the U.S. in this issue would be rather timely.
"I understand how difficult it is to face such challenges as Ukraine is facing nowadays," said Wess Mitchell. "Our priority is to ensure that Ukraine is stable and secure. My suggestion is just take all the necessary steps in your competence to show the IMF that your intentions are serious. Analysis of the situation, reasoning of decisions and their realization should work".
In the context of trade relations, the parties agreed to continue the negotiations in view of the strategic partnership of the countries and the formation of mutually beneficial cooperation.
The Head of Government also invited Wess Mitchell to participate in the second reform conference to be held in Denmark in June.
